Benzodiazepines

Another medication used mostly to treat bipolar mania, is benzodiazepine. This medication effects the central nervous system and is a depressant. It slows down the neurotransmitters that slow down brain function. These medications are also used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. Benzodiazepines used include clonazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam and diazepam.

Antidepressants

Antidepressants are also commonly used as Bipolar Medications. Antidepressants usually are prescribed to help with symptoms because they will not stabilize the mood swings that are characteristics of the disorder. When given, they are given in low doses and a patient is closely monitored. This is because the medication can actually trigger a manic episode.
