Bipolar Disease is known by many names. It is referred to as bipolar disorder, bipolar affective disorder, manic depression or manic depressive disorder. The disease is characterized by extreme mood swings and the inability to control these mood swings. Bipolar Symptoms

• Inflated self esteem
• Extreme energy
• Feeling no need to sleep
• Reckless behavior
• Extreme happiness

Manic episodes can be dangerous when they are extreme. In severe cases a person may become very reckless or delusional and cause harm to themselves or others. In many cases, though, manic episodes simply produce a high feeling that is not harmful and therefore it is not treated.

The depressive episodes are often more severe and occur more often. They usually require some type of medication to help keep them under control. Depressive episodes are the complete opposite of manic episodes. Depressive episodes are consider the low end of the spectrum. During a depressive episode a person may feel:

• Very sad
• Anxious
• Suicidal
• Preoccupied with death
• Tired all the time
• Lack of hunger
• Chronic pain

Depressive episodes can lead to many problems. Anyone having suicidal thoughts should immediately get professional attention. Most often people with Bipolar Disease are treated for depressive episodes because of the suicidal tendencies that this type of episode can bring about. Treatment is usually both medication and some type of therapy.

Understanding the symptoms of Bipolar Disease will allow you to recognize the diseased in yourself or in others. Getting a proper diagnosis can lead to treatment that will help to stabilize moods and allow you to live without the extreme symptoms of the disease.
