With the advancements in ADHD treatment, you now have a larger range of ADHD Medicine options. In the past the only real choice was if you wanted name brand Ritalin or generic, but now you can actually compare different types of medication so you can find the right treatment. This, of course, also leads to the need to be more educated about ADHD Medicine choices.

ADHD is almost always treated with a stimulant as the first line and a depressant as a second line treatment. That has not changed. The medications available, though, have changed. The main differences in the medications now is dosage.

There are medications now that have a delayed release or formula that makes it so it only has to be taken once a day instead of twice a day. This can be very helpful with school aged children where getting in that middle of the day dosage could be a challenge.

Deciding on the First Medication

Your doctor will likely work with you to try to figure out what medication to try first. You will be able to immediately rule out some medications based upon your child’s ability to swallow pills and their daily schedule. You should work with the doctor and voice any concerns that you have before a prescription is written out. After all, the main goal should be to find the right ADHD Medicine the first time out.

For many people, as mentioned, the ability to swallow pills plays a large role. Most of the once a day medications can not be crushed or cut because they are designed to release medicine over time and if they are altered then this affects how they are dosed inside the body.

Your child’s comfort and health are why you want to try to find the right medication the first time and why such care should be taken in choosing that first ADHD Medicine.
